Our advice for Scotland
If you want the saving on the nights you’ll actually use the tub – a frosty January evening, not a mild October one – the IceSpa is the one to have. Its EVI compressor keeps it working efficiently down to -25°C, and it still delivers 3.3kW of heat at -10°C, which is when a standard pump has long since handed over to your expensive electric heater. The O’Spa 5kW is excellent value for a hot tub in a sheltered garden or for owners who mainly use the tub from spring to autumn. Choose the integrated-step version if you’d rather the pump disappeared into the steps than sat beside the tub.

How does a heat pump work?
A heat pump works like an air conditioner in reverse: instead of pumping heat out of a room, it pumps heat from the outside air into your water. Because it moves heat rather than generating it, every unit of electricity it uses delivers several units of heat – which is where the saving comes from. Here’s the cycle:
- A fan draws outside air over the evaporator.
- Warmth in the air is transferred to a circuit of eco-friendly refrigerant gas.
- A compressor raises the gas to a high temperature.
- In the heat exchanger, the gas passes its heat into your hot tub water.
- The gas cools back to liquid and returns to the evaporator, and the cycle repeats.

- For best performance we recommend a heat pump only on hot tubs with a factory-fitted circulation pump.
- The pump sits between 500mm and 1 metre from the hot tub, on a solid, level base.
- We plumb an inlet and outlet into the tub’s cabinet to circulate water through the heat pump.
- You’ll need a 13amp RCD-protected waterproof socket within 2 metres of the pump.
Common questions
Does a heat pump work in a Scottish winter?
Yes – and winter is when the saving is biggest. The Poolex IceSpa keeps working efficiently down to -25°C and still delivers 3.3kW of heat at -10°C. The O’Spa 5kW is rated to -7°C, so it suits sheltered sites and milder use. Whichever you choose, your hot tub’s own heater stays in place as a backup for the very coldest nights.
How long does it take to pay for itself?
It depends on your tub, its insulation and how much you use it, but on a hot tub heated year-round in Scotland most customers see the pump pay for itself within a couple of winters – and it keeps saving every month after that. Fitted in autumn, it starts paying back from the first cold month.
Can I add a heat pump to a hot tub I already own?
If your hot tub was supplied by us and has a circulation pump we can fit a heat pump, whatever. Send us a photo of your tub on WhatsApp and we’ll confirm if it can be installed or not.
Is it noisy?
No. Poolex heat pumps run at a low hum, similar to a modern fridge, and the pump can sit up to a metre from the tub, away from where you sit.
Will it heat the tub faster?
Yes. A heat pump adds heating capacity on top of your tub’s built-in heater, so the water reaches temperature more quickly and recovers faster after use.
Can I add it to my finance?
Heat pumps are classed as renewable products, so they can’t be included in a hot tub finance agreement. The pump is paid for separately – by card or bank transfer – and we still fit it on the same day as your new tub.
